How to resize RAID 5 partition without losing data

Don't know how to resize RAID 5 partition? This article will help you.

Because of RAID 5 benefits and the price of disk drives have drastically dropped, many companies begin or have implemented RAID 5. However, the same with single physical hard disk, the virtual partitions on RAID 5 array also runs out of free space. Nobody wants to start from scratch and rebuild the RAID array. Why not resize raid5 partitions?

Before resizing raid 5 partitions

  • Don't break the raid 5 array.
  • Open disk management and find out the partition layout.

A raid 5 array displays as Disk (x) in disk management, if you are not sure which disk is the raid 5, open your BIOS or Windows application to check, the capacity is an important parameter to identify.

Disk management

In my computer, Disk 0 is a raid 1 array and Disk 1 is RAID 5. In your computer, if there is other partitions on the same raid 5 array, this problem can be solved easily, just follow the steps to resize RAID 1 partition.

Add disk or copy to resize raid5 partition

If there is no other partitions on the raid array, it is a bit more complicated to resize raid 5 partitions. You may add a new disk to the array and then resize partitions, or copy this raid and then resize. This depends on your raid card controller.

If you raid card controller is able to rebuild raid 5 without data loss, then follow the steps below:

1. Add a new disk to this array.

2. Rebuild this raid, after that the new capacity shows as Unallocated at the end of this array.

Unallocated space

3. Launch partition magic server software, right click the partition you want to extend and select "Resize Partition".

In the pop-up window, drag the right border rightwards to hold the unallocated space.

4. Click OK and back to main window, press "Apply" button on top left to proceed. Within several minutes the unallocated space will be added to the raid 5 partition.

Raid5 resized

If you raid controlle is not able to rebuild raid5 array without losing data, then follow the steps below:

  • 1. Copy your raid 5 to another hard disk (Disk 4) with the build-in "Disk Copy Wizard" feature.
  • 2. Replace original raid 5 disks with larger disks, create RAID 5 array from BIOS or via your raid application.
  • 3. Copy Disk 4 to the new raid 5. (you can extend partition during copying)
